Gettysburg is the most haunted city I have ever visited. The large numbers killed in a short time span may account for that. The battles were fierce and most of the casualties merely boys, not full grown men. The ghosts of Gettysburg can be captured day or night with camera, video or audio tape. Many anomalies have been reported on the battlefields, and even during the shooting of the movie Gettysburg.
Here is a run down of the battle events.
Day 1 July 1st, 1863 - The Battle Began
Day 2 July 2nd, 1863 - Sickles Advances
Day 3 July 3rd, 1863 - Plans and Preparations
Casualties Killed Wounded Missing Total
Union 3,155 14,530 5,365 23,040
Confederate 2,600 4,500 12,800 19,900
(above may be approximate)
After the battle, Lee retreated west and southwest through Hagerstown, Maryland and into Virginia. Imboden's wagon train stretched for over 17 miles. Meade considered pursuit, but felt that the Appalachian passes prohibited full pursuit. Meade's decision not to pursue Lee angered Lincoln, who expected a decisive victory. Lee was forced to return to Virginia. The war lasted another 2 years.
